Riskelo

Support

A question, a typo in a question, a breakdown: write to bob.oulhen@gmail.com. I usually answer within a few days.

For a breakdown to be fixable, please say if you can: the device (iPhone, iPad, Mac) and its system version, the version of Riskelo, the board and the game mode, and what you were doing just before.

The full manual is inside the app, at the How to play button on the home screen and at the question mark in the top bar during a game. It answers most questions of rule.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an internet connection?

No. The questions are inside the app, packs included. Nothing is ever downloaded.

Are there in-app purchases or ads?

No ads, ever. Optional question packs are bought once and for all: sixteen school packs for grades 6 to 9, and one pack of 1970s and 1980s rock. The game and its two thousand four hundred general-knowledge questions are whole without them.

Do I have to create an account?

No, and there is none. Nothing is asked of you, nothing is sent.

Which devices?

iPhone and iPad on iOS 17 or later, Mac on macOS 14 or later. It is the same app, and the board adapts to the screen.

In which language?

English and French. The questions, the menus and the manual follow together. The language is chosen on the Packs screen, at the top — each language has its own bank of questions, written for its reader rather than translated.

Do my games sync between my devices?

No. Each device keeps its own games, locally. There is no server, so there is no syncing.

How do I erase my games?

Deleting the app erases everything: the game in progress, the library and the recorded moments. No trace is left anywhere else.

I lost my game in progress.

It is saved at every move and whenever the app goes to the background; the Resume game button appears on the home screen as soon as there is one. If it is gone, the library (Saved games) keeps one moment per turn: open the game and resume at the turn of your choice.

A question has a wrong answer.

Send me the exact wording — the app has no reporting button, but every error reported is corrected in the next version.

Is the game suitable for children?

Yes. The Easy questions setting is made for that, and the machine's knowledge slider lets you set an opponent to their measure. No ads, no purchases inside the game, no outside content.

The clock is too short.

It is set to fifteen seconds on the first question. That setting holds the whole balance of the game. An adjustable clock is planned for a future version.

Troubleshooting — playing across several devices

In the same room

Check these four points first; they settle nearly every case:

  1. The devices are in the same room.
  2. Wi-Fi is on at both ends — even with no network to connect to: it is what carries the direct link. Airplane mode cuts everything.
  3. The local network permission has been accepted. It can be restored in Settings ▸ Riskelo ▸ Local Network.
  4. Both devices have the same version of Riskelo.
What the screen saysWhat to do
No table in sight Check that the other device really tapped Open a table and stayed on that screen; move the devices closer; check Wi-Fi at both ends.
The link could not be established The invitation expired after twenty seconds. Start again, and accept the network permission straight away if it is asked for.
Linked to …, but nothing is coming The link is good: it is the launch that is not arriving. It is up to whoever opened the table to start the game.
Different versions One device sent a game the other cannot read. Update both from the App Store.
Link lost Distance, sleep, or the app going to the background. Keep Riskelo on screen while setting up.

The remedy that works when nothing else does: swap the roles. Let the device that was searching open the table, and the other one join. A local link can run in one direction only, and swapping is then enough to get the game started.

Far away, with a code

Here neither Wi-Fi nor distance matters: each player just needs an internet connection, any connection.

A game played far away can be picked up another evening, under the same code: "Play across devices", then "Remotely, with a code". Whoever opened the game comes back first, since their device holds it; the other player then finds it in the same place, or types the six letters again.

What the screen saysWhat to do
That code leads nowhere A code stays good for a week after your last session, then it is wiped. If you were picking a game back up, it may be that whoever opened it is not back yet: reopening the room is up to them, so tap "Try again" once they are there. Otherwise, check the six letters, or ask for a new one. Case and spaces do not matter, and the digit zero counts as the letter O.
The game has already started You cannot slip into a game in progress. Somebody has to open a new one — but a player who was in it and got cut off is still expected.
The game is full Four players at most, one device each.
Nothing answered Check your connection, Wi-Fi or cellular. If all is well on your side, it is the game server that is not answering: “In the same room”, which depends on nobody, is still available.
Link lost — trying again Do not leave. A tunnel, a lift, an incoming call: the game picks itself up as soon as the link comes back, and it waits two minutes. Keep the screen on.

The link opens a web page instead of the game? That happens when the system has not yet connected the site to the app — often just after installing. The page carries an Open in Riskelo button, and the code is written on it in large type: it can be typed by hand in Play across devices ▸ Far away.

Through Game Center

You have to be signed in to Game Center — Settings ▸ Game Center — and, to invite somebody, have them among your friends. A Game Center game that gets cut off cannot be resumed: that is a limit of Apple's service. If your connection drops often, the six-letter code is the path to prefer.

What is planned

  • An adjustable clock, for playing with children or slower readers.
  • A real world map, in place of the hexagons.
  • New questions with every version.
